NO JACKPOT - HARRAH'S SLOT MACHINE TILTED
State police have determined that a slot machine at Harrah's New Orleans Casino did not spin out a $1.3 million jackpot that two dissatisfied players claimed they won.
It just looked like a winner on the "Wheel of Fortune" machine on July 9. Instead, an inspection of the machine showed it was a "reel tilt," in which the wheels spin continuously and the play is not completed.
"The Louisiana State Police report affirmed what we had surmised," said Ed Rogich, vice president for marketing of International Game Technology of Reno.
IGT took responsibility for the payoff, if one had been ordered.
The players, Garrett Griggs and Steven Livaudais, both of Mandeville, claimed the machine registered a jackpot.
Rogich said the typical slot machine takes in about 3,500 pulls of the handle daily and registers about one tilt per month. A tilt can be caused by a number of factors, including jammed tokens, a power surge, improper maintenance and a security breach, he said.
The machine was checked by Gaming Laboratories International, an independent auditor in Colorado, which determined it had gone into the tilt mode.
NEW GAMING REGULATION COULD STOP 'PROBLEM' GAMBLERS FROM PLAYING IN MISSISSIPPI CASINOS
JACKSON, Miss. - Compulsive gamblers in Mississippi will have to wait longer before they can roll the dice again.
Under a new regulation proposed by the state Gaming Commission, once a person asks a casino to exclude them from gaming on their property they can't change their mind for a minimum of two years.
"We need to do something to help people," said Chuck Patton, executive director of the commission. "I do know that people slip up."
Patton said the new regulation will be voted on in September. If it passes the commission, it will go into effect in October.
He said the old regulation governing self-exclusion doesn't set a time limit for gamblers, meaning a person who asks a casino to exclude them from gambling can come in the next day and get a waiver and begin gambling.
Under the new regulation, after the two-year period, problem gamblers have to file a written request with the casino to be removed from their self-exclusion list and wait 30 days for a decision.
Patton said the new proposal also prohibits a casino from granting credit to gamblers who sign the self-exclusion list and they can't cash any checks. The regulation also forbids any direct mail advertising by the casino.
The proposal has the backing of the Mississippi Council on Problem and Compulsive Gambling.
Betty Greer, the organization's executive director, said the regulation will "help compulsive gamblers" help themselves.
"Before each property set their own time limit. It may have been a year or some properties may have had two years or some may have six months," she said. "I think this will be easier for the commission to administer."
The self-exclusion lists kept by the state's 31 casinos aren't shared with each other and Patton said the proposal doesn't change that. But it is more sweeping than in other states where casino gambling is legal.
Todd Westergard, a research specialist with the State Gaming Control Board in Nevada, said gamblers there can put themselves on a self-exclusion list at a casino.
Like Mississippi's proposal, Nevada gamblers can't receive direct mail offerings from a casino after being on the list and they are denied credit or the ability to cash checks at the casino.
"At this point, the commission has given (casinos) the discretion in terms of amounts of time they have to stay on the list," he said.
In New Jersey, regulators there are considering similar policies to Mississippi's.
"The division is also exploring that issue from a regulatory perspective to see if there is some way we can help problem gamblers," said Katherine Lyon, a spokeswoman for the New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement.
In Missouri, though, regulators there have enacted a regulation that bars gamblers for life who put themselves on a self-exclusion list.
CASINO BOAT COLLIDES ON MISSISSIPPI RIVER
A casino boat en route to Indiana collided with a tow boat early Monday on the Mississippi River at the Missouri Bootheel. No one was seriously hurt, but the casino boat was badly damaged.
The accident happened near Caruthersville, Mo., about 200 miles south of St. Louis. Ninety-one people aboard the Belterra casino boat had to be rescued.
The boat took on water very quickly following the accident, but managed to stay afloat long enough for emergency workers and volunteers to rescue the passengers, said Jim Brimhall, who coordinated the rescue for the Pemiscot County Emergency Response Team.
"We could have had 100 bodies floating in the river," Brimhall said. "That boat could have been like the Titanic."
Three people were treated at a hospital for minor injuries and released. By late morning, the bottom of the boat sat on the river bed in shallow water near Caruthersville, ironically, not far from the Casino Aztar, another gambling boat that sits permanently docked there.
"Pretty extensive damage," said Lt. James Collins of the U.S. Coast Guard. An investigation is expected to take at least at week. Both the pilot of the casino boat and the tow boat pilot will be tested for drugs and alcohol, Collins said.
The casino boat was recently built in Mobile, Ala., and was on its way to its permanent home in Vevay, Ind. It had been scheduled to open in August near the Markland Dam on the Ohio River.
About 1:15 a.m., the captain of the Belterra issued a Mayday call, and said his boat was taking on water following a collision with the tow. The southbound tow, the Elizabeth Ann, was carrying two cement barges when it collided with the side of the northbound casino boat, ripping a 70-foot-long, 10-foot-wide hole, authorities said.
Rescue squads from several counties in Missouri and Tennessee responded, along with dozens of volunteers. The volunteers had been trained in case just such an accident happened at the Casino Aztar.
Collins said the Belterra passengers were crewmen as well as construction workers who were still putting the finishing touches on the vessel as it made its was to Vevay, a town of 1,400 residents about 50 miles from Cincinnati.
The tow and barges were not badly damaged, though Collins said the tow did experience some minor flooding in its front compartment.
Officials with the Belterra Casino did not immediately return phone calls from The Associated Press. A spokeswoman for the Missouri Barge Line of Cape Girardeau, Mo., which owns the tow boat, refused comment.

Blond AND Smart?
|
Two bored dealers are waiting around for someone to walk up and try their luck at the craps table. A very attractive lady comes in and wants to bet twenty-thousand dollars on a single roll of the dice. The dealers agree.
She says, "I hope you don't mind, but I feel much luckier when I'm half naked." With that she strips naked from the waist down, and rolls the dice while yelling, "Momma needs a new pair of pants!" She then begins jumping up and down and hugging each of the dealers.
"YES! I WIN! I WIN!" With that she picks up her money and clothes and quickly leaves.
The dealers just stare at each other dumbfounded. Finally one of them asks, "What did she roll anyway?" The other answers, "I don't know. I thought YOU were watching the dice!"

Bill peeks in heaven and sees a couple of old boring men sitting around at a table. Bill takes a look in hell and sees really beautiful women, sex, drugs, rock and roll, and most of all, gambling.
So Bill says : I am a gambling man, I want to go to hell! Once in hell, Bill is immediately thrown into the fire. So Bill says : hey, what the hell is this, I saw all the gambling, the women, and sex?
The devil says: 'That was just a demo version."

QUESTION: What is the difference between poker and video poker? -Beulah S
ANSWER: The main difference is that with real poker, you are dealing with a group of real people. You use yourself as a tool, bluffing and calling. It's a betting mind game, that progresses along depending on the people at the table. Video Poker on the other hand, is simply choose the cards you wish to keep, get delt some new ones, and hope the combination is a winning one. If you'd like a more in depth disscussion between the diferences, I'd suggest going to http://www.pokerexposed.com -Mike

Interesting points people. However, the 'Real vs. Virtual' Casino will never truly be won because it all depends on how the customer feels. It all comes down to personal preference. Which do you prefer? Should We do a Survey? -Mike
